The base is solid and incredibly stable. This fan has one large button on the front of the base. Press it once and you get low speed (which is pretty powerful, but quiet). Press it twice and you get HIGH speed.. stand back.. you could get knocked over! Seriously, though, the high speed can air out a room in 20 minutes! Because of the design, it can be used as a table fan AND as a floor fan (you simply put it on the floor, point it upward and operate it by stepping on the starter button! Works great as a floor fan and takes up much less space the conventional floor model fans! It' sleek, sturdy, powerful, compact, easy to move (it's lightweight and has a clever handle built into the fan assembly). The price is an incredible bargain for such a wonderfully designed product!
