Sunbeam HTM5 Tea Drop Hot Tea Maker 28oz Black/brushed Chrome Review

Sunbeam HTM5 Tea Drop Hot Tea Maker 28oz Black/brushed Chrome

As an avid tea drinker, I was excited about ordering this new product. When it arrived, I couldn't believe that it worked just like a coffee maker and wasn't suited at all for tea.
1. It doesn't heat the water to boiling, which you need for good tea.
2. The tea never steeps, despite the advertising from Sunbeam. The water drips through the tea quickly, just as water drips through coffee grounds. I didn't see any difference in the settings on tea strength. All the tea is extremely weak, as when you just dunk a tea bag in warm water for a few seconds.
I called customer service at Sunbeam to find out if I was doing something wrong. The person I reached tried to work a machine himself, and then went to his supervisor. He finally said that my machine was working fine, so there was nothing to be repaired under my warranty. He asked me how long I expected the tea to steep, and I said that most teas recommend 5 minutes, but that this machine doesn't steep at all even at the highest setting. It just drips through, like a coffee maker, and so I felt their advertising was misleading. He said he would pass my complaint on, but there was nothing he could do for me. I could return it, he said, if I had a sales receipt.
That did not seem sufficient for me, so I am writing this review. I wish I had read the other ones before purchasing it! It is just a coffee maker that is over-priced and inaccurately advertised.

Sunbem Electric Kettle Review

Sunbem Electric Kettle

We bought one of these on sale at Target about 5 months ago.
It has performed as well as advertised, meeting all of our expectations.
I'm not sure why the other posters had bad experiences (though I see they appear to have posted on both versions of this kettle).
As for quality of the water, we've made tea, cocoa mixes and my French Press coffee (that I'm very particular about -French press vs drip coffee), all with no complaint. The manual does provide specific instructions for flushing the kettle prior to use -perhaps the posters failed to follow those instructions.
We use it 5 to 7 times a week, and have never had an issue with the auto shut off not functioning.
It does sound like heavy boiling, then appears to taper off some before it shuts off. Perhaps the other users didn't wait long enough for the full cycle. Opening the lid will definitely subject you to dangerous steam -it is boiling water.
I highly recommend this kettle, and will likely buy some as gifts for family. The convenience and water quality are far better than our stove top kettles of the past 20 or so years.

West Bend 53783 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Water Kettle, Black Review

West Bend 53783 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Water Kettle, Black

If your an expat or just an anglophile and you are left wondering, "Why doesn't America embrace the electric kettle?!" then this is the item for you. Sleek and aptly priced.
I don't know why you'd pay around $50 for something that just heats water... brand loyalty? I wouldn't pay the extra $15-$30 just for the flat metal plate that the Braun or Philips has. (The West Bend kettle has a metal coil to heat up the water: Yes, you have to clean the coiled versions, but it's exactly the same as cleaning out a coffee maker... white vinegar once in a blue moon. Hey, the Brits and the Irish don't mind the coil, why should I?)
The stouter version of this I think is too small, unless you live alone and don't drink that much tea/coffee/cocoa. Between us, my brother and I drink six to eight cups of tea a day, plus hot cereal on top of that and this kettle is more than sufficient (1.7 liters).
Some more good things:
It turns of automatically after it comes to a roaring boil.
See-through panel lets you see the water level.
So quiet, you wouldn't know it's on...
That's why it has a little red light that goes on.
Has a locking top so as to avoid spills.
The black fits in with my kitchen's decor.
It also comes in handy for when I'm cooking, using up all the burners and need just a bit of hot water, quickly. Or even if I am cooking rice or pasta, it's easier to heat up the water in the electric kettle and then pour it into the pot on the stove.
Two complaints: The cord is thick and not very flexible (the cord itself is about two feet). I have this plugged into the same outlet as my microwave and cannot use the two at the same time or else I'll have a circuit short... but then again, whoever remodeled the kitchen did a bad job on the electicity.
Makes a great present for any hot beverage lover or college student.

Aroma AWK-160SB Pasta Plus Water Kettle and Noodle Cooker Review

Aroma AWK-160SB Pasta Plus Water Kettle and Noodle Cooker

I use this as a water kettle only currently, and I really like it so far. I've looked for a long time for an electric kettle that allows the water not to contact any plastic, and this kettle has this exact feature -- the interior is completely metal although the lid is plastic, but you don't have to use the lid if you don't want to. I also like the way the heating element is completely sealed and that the kettle detaches from the base (the cordless feature). This kettle's construction appear to be very good quality, and it has a 1-year warranty. Its water kettle function works great -- it boils 1 liter of cold water in about 5 minutes. It being a noodle cooker/ soup warmer is a cool feature that I might use one day. This item also comes with a collander and a cute little metal pasta fork to aid you with cooking noodles. I'm very glad I found this kettle.

Aroma AWK-161 Clar-i-Tea 1.7-Liter Electric Water Kettle and Tea Brewer Review

Aroma AWK-161 Clar-i-Tea 1.7-Liter Electric Water Kettle and Tea Brewer

This is one of the few electric kettles I found with no plastic under the water line--although it does have a silicone gasket between the glass and metal parts. It boils fast and is reasonably easy to clean.
HOWEVER, it has a fatal flaw. The non-detachable mesh screen connected to the lid is not stainless steel. It visibly rusted within a week of purchasing the product. I called Aroma (the manufacturer) and they sent me a replacement, which started to visibly rust in 24 hours! This is not okay. Any metal in the product should be food grade stainless steel.

With 1500 watts of power, this electric kettle quickly brings up to 1-3/5 liters of water to a roiling boil--great for hot chocolate, instant coffee, oatmeal, instant soups, noodles, baby formula, and more. Simply add water, close the lid until it locks securely into place, and push the power switch located on the power base. The uniquely designed appliance not only provides a tempered-glass carafe for viewing the boiling process, but it also comes with a stainless-steel tea infuser that accommodates both loose-leaf and bagged teas, making it possible to brew a variety of teas right in the pot after the water has boiled. Best of all, the unit's patented Strix electric connector delivers power to the kettle through its stationary base, which means the kettle can be lifted off the base for graceful pouring without the hassle of a cord. The kettle also swivels 360 degrees in either direction on its base, making it a comfortable choice for both right- or left-handed users. For safety and peace of mind, the unit automatically turns off once water comes to a boil or if the kettle's empty. Other highlights include an "on" indicator light, a cool-touch handle, a decalcification filter, an easy-to-clean design, and cord storage in the base. The electric water kettle and tea brewer measures approximately 9 by 7-2/7 by 8-3/5 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.
