(More customer reviews)I have no idea what the problem is with this item, but after attempting to find one that works in my local area, I give up. I've taken three of them back to the place of purchase hours after buying it. Why? Because despite following manufacturer's instructions to the letter (and rinsing the rice, and following guidelines for usage, and following their recipes), the thing shuts down halfway through the first cycle of usage and quite simply stops working...it actually appears to be shorting out or something, though judging from the rank plastic smells that have consistently filled my kitchen, I'm guessing the thermostat is flawed and allowing the unit to overheat and burn out.
Used to be you could count on Oster for high quality and long lived products. I'm convinced those days are gone for good. Nothing I've bought from this company recently has been up to snuff--and this rice cooker is the bottom of the barrel. AVOID this unit.

Found that if I started the steamer at 15 minutes, waited till I saw steamer to put the vegetables in and restarted the steamer, it worked great. Have not tried to slow cooker part.

(More customer reviews)Wow! I am so glad that I took a chance on this rice/steamer.. I almost passed this item up because I only saw one review and it was a bad review. Well I took a chance and this is one nice Item. I purchased ours for 19.99 at Target. There were only two left. Let me get to how this all started. First of all I came across a proctor silex rice cooker, for 19.99, I passed that cooker up and then went back to look for that cooker and it was gone. So I did some research on rice cookers. Come to find out, this one had what I was really looking for. The proctor was only a rice cooker. This Rice cooker/steam, can not only cook rice, but steam veggies and fish. It is like a one cook pot.
So, rushed home from the store, washed everything, out of the box and read the directions and started putting everything in the pot. I used jasmine rice, and seasoned the rice the way that I wanted it. When I tell you that I have never tasted rice like this, I said, well what have I been eating? I always wondered why I could never get brown rice or any rice cooked right, now I know. Not only did this rice cooker cook the rice just right, but It also steamed the veggies just the way I like them.... Wow what a deal.. Not let me also say that I only washed the steamer, top and base that goes inside of the rice cooker. You are not to was the base in water.
I am so glade that I took a chance on this item, and I am glad that I will be making healthier food for my family. Our children are so excited about the rice cooker. I see why there were only two left on the self. And I see why you should have a ricer cooker.
Now the other rice cooker that I wanted to purchase was used and only cooked rice. I was also told that it was returned because the person who purchased the item did not like the it cooked. So I am glad that I passed it up. This was worth the price and we feel like we made a wise investment and that we used our money wisely.
Now last thing is that this comes with a user manual that has a few recipes included. Well I am on my way to eat more rice and veggies!

The only complaint I have that prevents me from giving five stars is the lack of insert baskets for steaming. Incidentally, I've donated my slow cooker to Goodwill, since this pot does excellent slow-cooked chicken stock after pressure-cooking the whole chicken in record-time.

(More customer reviews)I must say this is my first cooker, and I chose a small one since I'm single. I found it handy to have the meal ready and warm when I come home for lunch breaks (I live close to the office), or in the evenings, when I'm tired and don't feel like cooking. The cooker has a cook mode and a "keep warm" - once the cooking is done it switches to the latter and the warm food awaits you to arrive home!
I found the instructions regarding how much water to use (depending on rice quantity) to be a little on the low side - the rice I got was somewhat dry for my taste. I also used it to cook other grains - quinoa and millet (BTW, the I millet I get with the cooker is the best I've tasted so far). Learning from the rice experience, I now put more water, actually I use more water than if I would cook in a pot!
If you stick to the grains/water proportions, you have no problem with making a mess in the kitchen. If you use (much) more water, you might see the lid and the area around the cooker becoming a little stained, as in steam/water which dried and left some stains. For me this is not an issue - I want a good food first, kitchen comes after. Actually, you might not even see that - it's such a minor issue - but if you do, then you just need to use less water. In my experience, this doesn't happen with rice, but other grains (notably millet) swell a lot more during cooking. The instructions (and the web) say that it is possible to cook other dishes (stews, etc.) using the cooker, but haven't done that yet.
This cooker doesn't have an on-off button, you need to plug and unplug it from the outlet. This is a non-issue for me, but "your mileage msy vary". I guess this can actually work to your advantage: if you are really cheap, you can get an appliance device which you can program so that the cooking starts - say - about 40 minutes before you get home, and thus you save electricity money on the "keeping warm" time. This is also possible to do with smarter cookers, but they cost $70+ more.

(More customer reviews)We thought we knew what rice was supposed to be like when we used our Costco Aroma Rice Cookers--we would just, as a matter of course, replace the old ones with the same brand... Until this time.
After reading up on consumer reviews and Japanese sites, we opted to try the Zojirushi Induction Heating Rice Cooker. The stainless steel is STUNNING--the pictures do NOT do it justice--it is gorgeous on my countertop--a piece of furniture, like the KitchenAid Mixer. It is easy to set up (clock time, etc) and easy to use. (The directions are very clear.) I tried some Jasmine Rice in it for our first try--and WOW! I was totally amazed! Each piece of rice is perfect in every way. I have never had such results before. Perfect temperature, perfect texture, perfect stickiness, perfect taste. The aroma in the kitchen fills the house and it's wonderful.
There is very little steam (unlike most rice cookers) and it is very easy to clean up. It keeps the rice at that perfect temperature for hours--even longer with the extended warm feature.
I know it's expensive--but in this case, I truly believe you get what you pay for. If you want to know what rice is supposed to be like--you must get one of these! Zojirushi makes a couple of different types of rice cookers--and I have heard that they are all terrific. This one cooks with induction heating, which uses magnets... the unit doesn't get hot...

Sanyo ECJ-M100S Micro-Computerized 10-Cup Rice Cooker Review

(More customer reviews)This is a very new model which Amazon started selling only recently. I bought this over a month ago from a third party seller here.
Being a native rice eater, and having cooked rice flawlessly on the stove-top for years, I have always been very dismissive of these automatic rice cookers because they never lived up to the hype. Every rice cooker I had tried would brown the bottom layer of my rice, and I would have to simply throw the bottom half an inch of cooked rice into the sink.
Well, turns out that I had been wasting time & money over the wrong type of rice cooker. A friend recommended that I buy a fuzzy logic cooker. The concept was appealing, but the two hundred dollar tag was the deal-breaker.
While searching for another kitchen item, I stumbled upon this Sanyo model which claimed to deliver the same fuzzy logic technology for about half the price of the leading brand. And bought it on a whim.
Boy, am I glad! I have nothing but praise for this machine. I have cooked white basmati rice, brown basmati, brown short grain, quinoa, steel-cut oats, and bulghur wheat. Very very pleased, and highly recommend it. Remember, you have to stick with their suggested water proportions.
It also has the Bake option which I haven't tried yet, but apparently, it is a premium feature found in the high-end models. Sweet.
Cleaning up is a breeze as the steam vent detaches neatly. Despite having a large capacity (20 cups of cooked rice), It doesn't take up much counter space either due to its tall, round design.
So, to anyone that's been avoiding the fuzzy logic cookers because they are overpriced: go grab this affordable winner to create your before and after rice moment.
Update on 9/1/2010:
Having used this rice cooker for over 6 months now, here are my additional observations:
- it could use a Bell or Ding at the end of the cooking cycle so I know if I want to turn it off or let it be warming.

Oster 4722 3-Cups Uncooked/6-Cup Cooked Rice Cooker with Steaming Tray, Red Review

(More customer reviews)I've never owned a rice cooker before this, however, I have cooked lots of rice over the years. Its an inexpensive rice cooker and if you follow the directions, it'll do fine.
Since moving to the mountains of Colorado, its taken me years to adjust to the lowered the boiling point due to the higher elevation (8300')... it takes more time (add ~10-20min) and the dry climate means using more water (for a 1 cup of dry rice, takes ~2.5+ cups water rather than 2cups). Still, there have been many times when rice just didn't work out the way I wanted.
So I mentioned that it would be nice to have a rice cooker and let it deal with the cook time. Of course I had done some research, and when this came in the mail as a present, I was a little nervous since Oster's seem to get so-so reviews. Well, I cooked my typical basmati rice, a 1/2 cup dry and added my typical 1c water plus extra, put lid on, pressed the button and went to do something else.
A lot of reviewers mention how the rice on the bottom gets over-cooked, sometimes brown or burnt. Some reviewers like the crunchiness, some hate it. Well, the directions tell you to stir the rice - especially the bottom of the cooker after 15 minutes. Sure enough, the rice at the bottom was starting to stick. I scraped it all loose, added another 1/4 cup water, chopped it up a little, put the lid on, and let fate take its course. Would the rice by a burnt mess? 20 minutes later we had the best sticky rice we've ever had!
Plus it seemed to cook faster. And I really liked that it went to 'warm' mode automatically. One major drawback: It spewed hot sticky water up under the lid and through the vent all over the kitchen but once we wiped the lid off (without picking up the lid), it settled down. If you are a neat freak or want a set-and-forgot, this rice cooker is not for you. And for me, I'll come up with a little steam catcher helmet and deal with the mess. For the price, its a good buy. And, I love the red color too!
[found this cool tip from Spyce: To help keep the starch from bubbling up and spraying out of the vent hole, rinse the rice thoroughly and drain. Heat a small amount of olive oil in the rice bowl, once the oil is heated, carefully add the rice and saute it for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the water and continue cooking.] I'm going to try this tip next time!
BTW, this cooker seems like a knock-off of the similar Rival rice cooker (both owned by Jarden]

Zojirushi NS-RNC10 Automatic 5.5-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

(More customer reviews)The Zojirushi cooker (both our old and this new one) does a splendid job cooking white and brown rice to the right consistency if properly prepared. The stay warm feature is great! We can cook a full pot of rice and leave it in the cooker for a couple of days and it stays warm and fresh. [Of course, you need to be careful to use common sense precautions to make sure you don't cause an environment where bacteria breed (i.e., like using unclean serving utensils).] The price may seem a little steep, but since we will use it nearly every day for years (like to old one), it's well worth the price.
We had used a 10 cup Zojirushi rice cooker/warmer for about four years until I damaged the nonstick liner by rinsing rice in it (oops!). When I contacted the company to see about getting a replacement liner, I was told it was $50 plus shipping! After an internet search, I found this 5.5 cup Zojirushi for a nominal amount more money.
We eat a lot of rice - almost daily, but honestly, a 5.5 cup cooker is just the right size for a family of 4 to 6. (We had never made 10 full cups of uncooked rice in the old cooker.) My mom's the connoisseur of rice brands - her rice always comes out perfect each time. Also over the many years she's cooked rice - what use to take some time and constant watching on the stove to get the perfect rice, the cooker/warmer does very efficiently without the worry of burning the rice.
As additional info for those who don't cook much rice, we use to cook white rice but now we cook brown rice. Took getting use to the switch to brown rice, but now we prefer it. We soak the brown rice for about 1/2 to 2 hours in water before cooking it and add a little more water than for white rice. (I believe the recipe that comes with the cooker says this.) It's not as difficult as I'm probably making it out. And, finally, you want to make sure you don't use metal utensils, abrasive cleaners, or abrasive scouring pads in the non-stick liner (or wash your rice in it!) to prolong its life.

Aroma ARC7171G 14- Cup Rice Cooker & Food Steamer Review

(More customer reviews)Even though I felt the low price on this cooker was suspect, I thought I would give it a chance. I wasn't expecting it to last long or work well - boy was I wrong!! I have used it several times a week for going on three years now, and it's still working flawlessly - try to say that about, well, probably any other small applicance in your entire kitchen.
Everyone should have a rice-cooker - they're great time-savers, not to mention meal-savers. Even people who can't boil water can make perfect rice every time.
The reasons I love my Aroma cooker in particular are:
1) It makes much less mess than others I've used (rice cookers tend to blurble starchy water around the rim while cooking, but the heavy glass lid of the Aroma, and the vent hole, keep it from spattering the counter)
2) It shuts off automatically when it's done cooking, regardless of the type of rice used (I still have no idea how it "knows" there's brown rice that needs a longer cooking time in there, as opposed to jasmine rice which cooks faster - but it does!)
3) It keeps the rice warm for hours if necessary without burning on the bottom or drying out
4) The inner pot lifts out easily to clean.
If I ever have to replace this little workhorse, I'll definitely replace it with another Aroma. (I hope by then they make one in red!)

Zojirushi NS-VGC05 Micom 3-Cup Electric Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

(More customer reviews)I did a lot of research prior to choosing the Zojirushi rice cooker and luckily for me by the time I was ready to purchase the company had come out with this model NS-VGC05 which is very compact and perfect for one person or even two. It does an amazing job of cooking the rice to perfection. The instructions were easy to follow especially for being a novice. I am anxious to try the different settings for different rices and cakes. I called the company to find out about the built in clock. The instructions did not explain whether you have to have the unit plugged in to recharge the clock. The answer is that you do not have to have it plugged in. It is a lithium battery that has a 5-6 year life and then you would call the company directly to have it replaced.
The clean up was really easy again by following the instructions. I highly recommend this product. It is definitely worth the money paid!!!

(More customer reviews)This is a step above the basic rice cooker. What I really like about this model is the pail that the rice cooks in is extremely easy to clean. Just soak it in water and everything falls out. Like all rice cookers, it is easy to use. I typically don't bother with the brown rice setting when cooking brown rice because it takes too long. I just cook all rice (brown & white) using the white rice setting, and it cooks fast and has good results. I haven't used the timer feature either, but I suppose that would be handy. It seems durable, too - we've used it 2-3 times a week for the last two years and it still works great.

The rice comes out really good and it is easy to use. You can cook vegetables at the same time. When it's done cooking the rice it goes into "warm" mode and keeps it nice and warm for you so you get it fresh. It is very light weight and easy to wash. No mess and ideal for a college student or family. It can cook rice for five people. Worth buying if you want a simple rice cooker, comes with a one year warranty. I don't expect it to last years but it's worth buying because you don't have to worry about cooking your own rice and having it come out bad. You can cook small or big amount of rice. Not bad for a low price rice cooker.
