Capresso 441.05 MT-500 Plus 10-cup Coffeemaker with Metallic Alloy Body and Stainless Thermal Carafe Review

Capresso 441.05 MT-500 Plus 10-cup Coffeemaker with Metallic Alloy Body and Stainless Thermal Carafe

Let's get the price issue out of the way: in no way is this "worth" its price premium over other brands by virtue of its construction / materials. You are considering buying this for one reason only: coffee geek self-indulgence in search of the best possible home-brewed.
With that acknowledged, how does it do? Answer: pretty damn well, with a couple of asterisks.
(Note: our standard of comparison is a late, lamented Braun Flavor Select, which made excellent coffee for close to a decade. But the current Braun models lack a couple of features we liked on the previous one, which threw the choice of a replacement open to all comers. We eventually settled on the Capresso.)
First off, this is FAST. It seems like there's barely enough time to put away the coffee bean jar and pull out a couple of mugs before it's ready to drink, at a perfect temperature: just slightly too hot to take more than a sip for the first couple of minutes. You do have to guess when the dripping has finished, since the brewing light doesn't go out for several minutes after.
The timed-brew feature, which is indispensible to us, sets up easily and works like a champ. We have well water but still use the water filter -- buy an extra pack at the same time you buy the coffeemaker. And we prefer using the included gold filter to avoid possible contaminants that could leech from a paper filter.
With those perameters, the flavor is incredibly good, smoother and less acidic than the Braun it replaced, using the same beans in the same quantity, while maintaining a similar richness and depth. Warning: just as high-quality stereo speakers can reveal shortcomings in source material and associated electronics, so this coffeemaker immediately lets you know if your coffee isn't up to the job. My wife's comment after her first cup: we need to use better beans.
If your brewed coffee sits around for more than a few minutes, Capresso's thermal carafe is a great improvement over Braun's warming plate. I often wait an hour for a second mug, and by then "burnt" aromas and flavors invariably creep into coffee that's been kept warm on a plate. Over that same time, the thermal carafe maintains a just-brewed flavor and seems to suffer only a minor temperature drop -- perhaps a couple of degrees.
Cleanup is definitely a bit fussy -- you remove the filter and filter holder for rinsing, and mop up the wet grounds that are invariably clinging to the bottom of the flip-up lid.
Now for those asterisks -- all minor annoyances, to be sure:
*The carafe is shiny stainless, while the coffeemaker itself has a brushed finish. That doesn't work well together -- especially in a kitchen where other appliances are brushed stainless. And I expect the carafe to start to show scratches after it's been around a bit longer.
*The carafe pours slowly with the "black dot" in position, and you need to almost completely invert it to get to the last couple of ounces.
*The water gauge has tiny, difficult-to-see numbers for my middle-aged eyes.
I haven't tried to replicate the "counter flood" problem occasionally reported on this and the identical non-metallic model, but I can see several ways it could happen: a stuck valve in the thermal cafafe lid, using more coffee than recommended in the instructions, or an ultra-fine grind. In other words, this coffeemaker is not engineered to be idiot-proof. I'm learning to check the valve every time we rinse the pot.
That said, this is the best home coffemaker we've ever used, which is why it gets five stars. Whether the quality justifies the cost is a matter for individual decision.

DeLonghi DCF210TTC Complete Frontal Access 10-Cup Drip Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe Review

DeLonghi DCF210TTC Complete Frontal Access 10-Cup Drip Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is a well-made intelligently-designed coffee maker that works well, has some outstanding features, but has some significant differences from common automatic drip machines. Brewing into a thermal carafe with no burner or warming plate below the carafe means the coffee will not get the bitter taste of being kept hot by continuing to cook it. But, it also will probably not be quite as hot as some people would find ideal. It's a compromise and involves personal preference. For me, the coffee is plenty hot and remains at a pleasant drinking temperature for well over an hour.
The way the carafe and its lid have to be designed to keep the steam from escaping and thus keep the coffee warm means it will pour into your cup a bit more slowly than from an ordinary carafe. To me, that's not a big deal.
Some have reported not getting the carafe properly seated, thus allowing the freshly brewed coffee to spill all over the place. I have trouble imagining how that could happen and even more trouble imagining how anyone could let it happen more than once. I would expect any rational person, after having such a mess to clean up once, would make certain to seat the carafe correctly in the future. It's not rocket science.
There have been some comments by others that rating this as a 10-cup coffee maker is misleading. All manufacturers rate coffee maker capacity in terms of 5-ounce cups, demi tasse cups, if you will. I ordinarily use a 10-ounce mug. So being aware of this, I govern myself accordingly. No big deal, and nothing different from any other manufacturer. Frankly, I don't know of any normal person who actually uses demi tasse cups any more. That was a standard serving 100 years ago, but not today.
The instructions provided by DeLonghi are somewhat lacking and it doesn't help that they combine the instructions for several different models with different features into a single booklet, printed in several languages. Not as helpful as it could be. That said, most of the operation is fairly intuitive. It is a little bizarre that the clock shows the hour from midnight to 10:00 a.m. as "0." I guess that's a European standard, but find it strange on a clock that displays a.m. and p.m. rather than a 24-hour clock. That's just a little wierd to me, but does not diminish my enjoyment of this coffee maker.
Operation is reasonably easy and the quality of the brewed coffee is outstanding. I am well satisfied and do recommend this machine.

Braun KF590 Impressions Digital 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker Review

Braun KF590 Impressions Digital 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Update: November 23, 2008:
I regret to report that this coffee maker stopped working today, less than 3 years after I received it. The power light goes on, but the heating element doesn't heat, and the water doesn't flow from the tank. The warranty is only one year, so no recourse there. While I was very happy with the Braun while it worked, I would expect a fairly simple mechanism to last longer.
I'm not saying everyone's Braun will suddenly stop working at about three years, and I don't know how well other coffee makers fare. However, I do know that most Cuisinarts have a THREE-YEAR warranty at no extra cost. With that timeframe, I could have replaced this for free (or, no more than the the price of shipping.) SInce I gave pretty much a rave review of this product, I wanted all potential buyers to know of my experience with its durability. It may still be worth purchasing, but I can no longer recommmend it without reservation.ORIGINAL REVIEW:
This Braun coffeemaker brews coffee so consistently hot and very flavorful that, if Aaron Copeland had worked for an advertising agency (shudder), his moving composition, "Fanfare for the Common Man," could have promoted it. Fortunately, he didn't.
OK, that intro was a stretch. So, without further delay, let me sing the praises of this Christmas gift:
A.Temperature. "It's not hot enough!" is perhaps the most common complaint about coffeemakers. We can divide this into two categories: First, the coffee is not hot enough when made, and second, the coffee does not stay hot after it is made.
1.The Braun KF 590 (also known as the KF590E) brews very hot coffee, when initially poured you couldn't take it any hotter unless you had damaged nerve endings in your mouth. As with any hot beverage, the coffee will stay warmer depending on the coffee cup's insulation qualities (thick walls, relatively narrow, perhaps pre-heated with hot water)
2.Temperature Duration. The carafe of my old Krups (Crystal Arome Time, #400 series) seemed to keep things warm for about 20 minutes; this was completely unsatisfactory and the main reason for wanting a new one. My new Braun (thanks Mom and Dad!) kicks Krups' butt in this area, keeping it hot for hours without a burnt flavor. The default setting (until automatic shut-off) is 2 hours of heat, but you can manually adjust it from 20 minutes to 3 hours.
B.Convenience of Operation: The Braun is relatively easy to use, but a limited number of buttons (4) and indicator lights (2) operate the clock, the automatic shut-off described above, and the automatic start-up (setting the time that you want the coffeemaker to begin brewing). It does take a bit of time to learn these programming features; I consulted the brief instructions for a few days before I got the hang of it. Once learned, it not easy to forget. I don't think this should be a factor in deciding whether to purchase this. The Braum brews coffee faster than in the old Krups, and like many machines, this one stops the coffee flow when the impatient (or the addicted) simply must pour a little java before all the water has run through. Noise level is about average, you can hear it brewing, but it's doesn't sputter loudly when done. Another contrast to the Krups is the nicely designed carafe handle and the ease of pouring coffee without spilling it.

C.Features: THE WATER FILTER-It's almost unbelievable that the instructions don't include the replacement model number for the "Braun Brita" water filter. They're not hesitant to tell you that it "improves coffee flavor by significantly reducing chlorine and also prevents calcification ... Provided that the cartridge is replaced regularly every two months, it not only brews better tasting coffee but can also extend the life of your coffeemaker by preventing [this gets redundant] calcification buildup. Braun water filer cartridges are available at your local retailer or Braun service centers."
WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU... Use the following to replace the "Braun Brita" water filter: The KWF2. (web citation: http://www.theessentials.com/jump.jsp?itemID=994&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C8%2C65%2C336&iProductID=994 ). As of this date, this costs $9.99 for a two-pack. At one filter every two months (see below), annual replacement (assuming no shipping) will cost you about $60, or about 75% of the current Amazon.com sale price. Braun and Brita executives must be in their cups about this sweet little arrangement they've brewed.
As stated immediately above, Braun's manual recommends that you buy a new water filter every two months, but the Braun-linked website above tells you to replace it every 70 brews. Depending on your consumption, that could easily take three or four months, not two. Also, running vinegar through the machine twice should dissolve most or all of the calcification, and one can always just buy bottled water.
Big Brother Braun reminds you that it's time to change the water filter with a small but cheesy-looking 12-month "time for a new filter" dial on top. This is a slightly annoying and unattractive feature on an otherwise stylish machine. There's a permanent (but removable) "gold cone" filter, the type of filter that most aficionados prefer for its superior brewing properties. It appears you can buy a replacement filter at Amazon.com, although other than an accidental tear or accumulated stains (which can be removed with baking soda and scrubbing), the filter should last for years. However, it doesn't look gold and it's not clear to me whether there really is a gold coating over the fine steel mesh. One can manually swing out the filter holder, or lightly push a small silver button atop the machine. Very nicely done.
D.Maintenance: Very easy: Wipe off the outside, run vinegar or water through it, and take out the gold cone filter and run water over it. Because part of the holder for the gold cone filter is metallic, it is supposedly not dishwasher safe, the manual recommends wiping it down with a damp cloth with a small amount of dishwashing soap if desired. I didn't see any metal parts except the metallic exterior of the holder; personally, I'm gonna dunk the thing. Since the manual is so incomplete, you may want to copy the "authorized" Braun Service Center number: 1-800/272-8611.
E. Where to Buy Accesories:
1.The KWF2 Water Filter:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000062UH2/ref=ord_cart_shr/103-7519344-0327817?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance&n=284507
2. Gold-Tone Filter
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007W04A2/qid=1137279064/sr=1-12/ref=sr_1_12/103-7519344-0327817?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=284507
F.The Bottom Line: Easily one of the best coffeemaker out there, the Braun KF590 makes delicious hot coffee that stays hot, and it sells at a very reasonable price. I considered the Braun 600 "Impressions" machine because of its thermos-like carafe, but that feature is a double-edged sword, you can't see how much coffee is left. Aside from the small but ridiculous water changer dial on top, the chrome and black Braun 590 looks good and is moderately sized for its capacity.
Look at the reviews of the other coffeemakers and you may agree that this is the best one for the money. I will be updating this review in a few months to let people know about the Braun's durability.

I ordered this for my parents when my dad was in the hopital.I was under a lot of stress as he had a heart attack. Apparently I did not see it was not for use in U.S.A.When I tried to return it, Sam the rep I was trying to work with was not helpful. He also kept referring to me as Mr. when I was Clearly female- Caren . He was aggravating and wanted to charge a re-stocking fee on top of me sending it back to get an American ready coffee maker. By then I would have paid for it twice.
I choose to get another coffee maker from a more reputable company. DON'T do business here . They aren't helpful
I buy off Amazon often ,but this is the first bad experience I've had in years

Jacobs Kronung Ground Coffee, Pack of 2- 17.6ounces Review

Jacobs Kronung Ground Coffee, Pack of 2- 17.6ounces
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We found Jacobs Kronung coffee in 1991 when we visited our son stationed in Bitburg Germany. They don't drink coffee so we had to find coffee and visited a local grocery store. The rich green bag looked inviting. We don't speak or read German and in the States, a green bag denotes decaffeinated but we decided to give it a try anyway and were we ever happy we did. Jacobs Kronung coffee is a fine ground coffee and it took several tries to get just the right amount but it was wonderful. We loved it! (And we were hooked!)
We mailed several bags home before we left Germany and then hunted for places in the States to buy more. Once in awhile we would find Jacobs in the Air Force Commissary but it was not a given that we could find it regularly. (We did ask our son to send more from time to time as a special treat.)
We've tried several of the blends but prefer the Kronung blend. Jacob's Meisterröstung is stronger and the Night and Day is a decaf version. I was surprised when Jacobs was purchased by Kraft, which shows they know a good product too. Thanks to the Internet, Jacobs Kronung Coffee is easily found and the price here on Amazon is the cheapest I've found.
My daughter-in-law just gave us a Frieling Stainless Steel 35-Ounce French Press from Amazon and I'm going to buy the Jacobs Kronung beans because I KNOW it will make a super combination.
Try it! If you like a wonderfully flavorful coffee at a bargain price, you won't be sorry!

Hamilton Beach 4 Cup Coffee Brewer Review

Hamilton Beach 4 Cup Coffee Brewer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My old 4-cup Mr. Coffee was a decent little coffeemaker and it lasted for about three years before it started to give me trouble. Technically it still works but the coffee it brews is only warm, not hot. So I decided it was time for a new machine.
I did a lot of research, and the fact of the matter is that there just aren't many good quality 4-cup coffeemakers on the market. I researched the models from Mr. Coffee, Cuisinart, and Black & Decker, and none of them got particularly good reviews. I went to local stores and played with the display models and all of them felt very light, flimsy, and cheap. Even the $40 Cuisinart was featherweight and felt like it would fall apart at any moment.
I've always had good luck with Hamilton Beach products, so when I found this one online, I had a good feeling about it. I did some more research and found that this particular model is used in hotels all over the country. That seemed like a good sign. Commercial grade products are usually built to a higher standard than consumer grade stuff.
So I ordered it, and sure enough, it's a major step above the 4-cup machines made by the other manufacturers. Even though it's made mostly of plastic, it is heavy and stable and definitely won't tip over easily. The power cord is heavy grade and has a 3-prong plug. The on/off switch has a nice spring action and seems durable.
Due to the fact that these are made for hotel rooms, there are picture-based instructions in white ink on top of the coffeemaker. If you are very concerned about appearances, this might bother you. It doesn't bother me. The #1 thing I'm concerned about is how the coffee tastes... and with that in mind...
It tastes great! It's very hot, much hotter than my old Mr. Coffee. But the water isn't TOO hot, so you don't need to worry about it making the coffee bitter and over-extracted.
I only have two complaints, and they are relatively minor: when you're finished brewing coffee and you open the basket holder to remove the grounds and filter, a small amount of water falls out and splashes onto the warming plate and onto the counter. It's not a huge amount of water -- maybe a teaspoon -- but it does do this every time I brew coffee. Just something to be aware of; have a paper towel handy and it's not a problem. My other complaint is that there is no way of knowing how much water is in the reservoir. Usually they have a little window or some other indicator, but this unit doesn't have either. Mildly annoying, but not a huge issue and obviously doesn't affect the coffee itself.
All in all, I'm very pleased with this coffeemaker and would recommend it to anyone who is searching for a good quality 4-cup machine.

AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS OF FRUSTRATION WITH MY EXPENSIVE STARBUCKS BARISTA AROMA GRANDE OVERFLOWING GRINDS AND SEDIMENT OVER THE TOP EDGE OF THE MELLITA PAPER FILTERS AND INTO THE COFFEE POT, I BOUGHT THESE FILTERS AT MY LOCAL ACE HARDWARE AND WAS AMAZED THAT THEY INDEED DO WORK BETTER WITH NO OVERFLOW. THIS PROBABLY IS DUE TO A TALLER PROFILE TO THE FILTER AND A MORE TIGHTLY FLUTED FILTER WALL. THIS MAKES A STRONGER FILTER EDGE WHICH DOES NOT FOLD DOWN AND PROBABLY INCREASES THE FILTRATION SURFACE AREA....HIGHLY RECOMMENDED OVER THE OTHER BRANDS.

We've had a Francis! Francis! X3 Espresso machine for well over a year now, and have gone through about a thousand ESE pods. We've tried hundreds of Illy, Espressione Arabica, and Espressione Classic pods, but these Lavazza pods are the best so far. The taste is consistently smooth, without the varying levels of bitterness we tasted in the other pods. We ordered 150 Lavazza pods about a month ago and I'm about to put in our next order. This is definitely the fastest we've ever gone through an order of 150 pods.

KRUPS KT4065, 10-Cup Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker, Stainless Steel Review

KRUPS KT4065, 10-Cup Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker, Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We have used Krups thermal carafe coffee makers for years, needing to replace them every few years because of hard water problems. We bought a Zojirushi BD-15 and it leaked water from the reservoir like a sieve, from the base of the unit. We then bought this Krups and were disappointed as soon as we started to use it. First, the lid of the coffee maker pops open to expose the basket and the fill chamber, which is a small opening in the back right corner. This isn't so bad by itself, except that you can't fill the reservoir with the carafe because the lid sufficiently obstructs the fill opening, particularly if you use the carafe which needs to be almost fully inverted because of its design. We had to use a separate container for this step. The opening of the carafe is so narrow (2.5") you can't put a hand through it to clean it.
The clincher was that the coffee maker overflowed onto the counter as it was brewing (not from the top of the basket, but from the top of the carafe). Even with careful positioning of the carafe, the coffee would not enter the carafe without some cajoling. This was a hit or miss proposition and required us to watch carefully. We are going to send this model back. They should bring back the Model 229, which was a much better design.

I'm at a loss as to the problems some other reviewers have had with this coffeemaker. I actually purchased the white unit but it's the same as this one except for the color and metal trim. I bought this machine locally and then went and read the reviews here on Amazon to make sure it was an OK unit. I was on the verge of returning it due to some of the negative comments but I figured "ah, to heck with it" and went ahead and set it up. First off, it makes a great cup of coffee and it's EASY to program. The pot is easy to pour...NO DRIPS and the water level indicator works as it should. I just wonder if all the negative reviewers work for the competition because I found no problems with this unit at all. Now, of course, time will tell if it will last many years as did my last machine but my first impressions are very good.

DeLonghi DC312T 14-Cup Drip Coffeemaker Review

DeLonghi DC312T 14-Cup Drip Coffeemaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For most people, almost any coffeemaker on sale here at Amazon will be fine. But if you're looking for the same kind of robust-flavor, non-bitter coffee served at places like Starbucks, then you need a coffeemaker with special capabilities. This machine has those capabilities--and at an excellent price. Here's what I mean: 1. it has a 14-cup capacity. This is important because it means you can put more grounds into the filter without worrying about it overflowing. 2. Water temperature is hot and delivered though a "showerhead." 3. This machine has a special setting that dribbles the water more slowly, steeping the grounds. This last (and unique to this machine) feature is what gives you exceptionally robust and flavorful coffee.
I've been through several coffeemakers (all exiled to the attic), and this one is the best--better than makers costing three-times as much. I bought mine for $35 at Target.
True, the clock-setting mechanism is clunky, but how often do you use that? On the other hand, the design of the water-tank and glass pot is very convenient.
August 2010 Update: coffeemakes is still going strong. The manufacturer has a new web presence with links for service and parts.

DeLonghi DCF212T Drip Coffeemaker with Convenient Front Access Review

DeLonghi DCF212T Drip Coffeemaker with Convenient Front Access
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When my $100 coffee maker quit, I researched coffee makers and found this model from DeLonghi I hadn't heard of before. The design of this model sets a new standard for on-the-counter coffee makers. It is incredible to be able to put the filter, coffee, AND WATER in the maker without moving the machine. The caraffe doesn't drip when pouring into the swing out arm (or into the cup later) so there's no messy drips to wipe up at any time.
The digital clock isn't the quickest to set since you have to hold a button in as it changes in minutes only, but hopefully that won't need set often.
The "aroma" button really works! There actually is a difference in the brewing aroma with it on.
Most importantly, the end product was a great cup of coffee! I'm thrilled with the coffee maker and haven't found a single negative aspect yet, including the price. I HIGHLY recommend this model. Kudos Delonghi, you really outdid yourself here. Amazon's shipping was simple and fast. The whole purchasing experience was exceptional. A+++++

DeLonghi DC514T 14-Cup Programmable Drip Coffeemaker Review

DeLonghi DC514T 14-Cup Programmable Drip Coffeemaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had my DeLonghi Esclusivo coffeemaker for exactly 3 months. It brewed the best tasting coffee I've ever had. It was my favorite coffee maker by far for the following reasons: Coffee is delicious -slow brewing permits a more robust coffee. Small footprint on my counter. Stylish design. VERY easy to program and use. Large opening through which to pour water. Charcoal filter to purify water. Automatic shut off. Caraffe has large opening for easy cleaning. NON-DRIP POURING!! I was in heaven with this coffeemaker and knew I'd found the perfect one. (I've had many in my lifetime.)
Unfortunately, two days ago, the plastic surrounding the hot plate began to melt. The vendor from whom I purchased it has already refunded my money and has asked me to return it. I will NOT purchase another one for fear of fire hazard. This coffeemaker would have received 10 stars from me had it not begun to melt itself to death. For this reason, I'm heartsick.....it WAS the perfect coffeemaker.

Krups KM4065 12-Cup Stainless-Steel Coffeemaker
This review is for the Krups KM 4065 coffeemaker. I believe this is the first of a new line of coffeemakers designed Bjorn Dahlstrom. At the moment, this coffeemaker is not on the Krups website and there is little information available on the web. I've only had it for a couple of days so here are my initial thoughts.
Pros:
1. Looks fantastic
2. Seems reasonably well built and the top door opens and closes smoothly
3. This has a different water gauge from the FM series and it works well and is easy to read (no bubbles).
4. I've filled the reservoir from both a Brita pitcher and from the included carafe without spillage. (That said the fill area is at the back near the door hinge)
5. Uses #4 Filters
6. Makes a great cup of coffee
7. The included carafe pours well
Cons:
1. Pricey for a unit without a thermal carafe
2. Programming is non-intuitive and a little frustrating
3. Manual could be a lot better
4. Like most stainless steel appliances, fingerprints may be an issue if you are not careful
5. Durability of main button to open top lid remains to be determined
6. Carafe seems a little light and the cover flimsy
Overall, I am very pleased with this beautiful coffeemaker. It looks like the design changes have addressed the water gauge issue with the FM series and so far I've had no leaks. The carafe works well so coffee spillage is not a problem and most importantly my initial experience is that this machine makes good coffee.
I have deducted one star due to the fact I've only had it 2 days and can't attest to the long-term durability of the unit and it is a little pricey compared to competing units.

Braun KFK500-BK AromaDeluxe 10-Cup Replacement Carafe, Black Review

Braun KFK500-BK AromaDeluxe 10-Cup Replacement Carafe, Black

My husband loves this coffee pot. The problem is, it is a little sensitive. He was washing it with a brush and barely bumped it on the sink, and while it did not break it did put a large crack around the carafe. We are very careful while handling it, primarily for the reasons listed by other reviewers, and we've only had it about 6 weeks. Maybe the glass is a little thin or not tempered properly? Either way, be careful while washing it.
